Title: Cannot upload large files via http
Post by: netforce on June 19, 2009, 04:07:50 PM
Hi Guys,

My gallery worked fine before. I was able to upload flv files no problem. Now I get the error Script called without the required parameter (s) I went through the support docs and did the settings as specified. I also upgraded my gallery to the latest version. I setup an user account test/test Gallery is at http://woojinjung.com/gallery

Any help would be great.

Uploads work as expected - see http://woojinjung.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-1000
There's a limit for your webserver concerning the file size and dimensions of the file that you can upload. Without details on the file your uploaded that failed we can't tell more.

Yes images work but I stated it was a flv file which is a movie file and it is 15MB in size.

Now that's not very amazing: you will run into time-outs (both server-sided as well as client-sided) for such large files - you simply can't upload such files using http. Use FTP-uploads plus batch-add for videos and other files that are that big in terms of file-size. There's nothing to circumvent the timeouts when using http uploads. The script simply can not tell you what actually went wrong (because it ran into the timeout), so you get the error message you initially reported, which is a result of the form field being empty if you time-out (so coppermine is behaving as expected). There's no way to determine the difference between an empty field and "emptiness because of time-out".

I uploaded through FTP before even larger ones about 35MB so why can't I do that now?

I mean I've uploaded them through http before and had no problems... larger ones that were like 35 MB. So why can't I keep doing that?

Well, I have no idea - something might have changed on the end of your webhost - they may have reduced the period a PHP script is allowed to run. Why you run into time-outs can have several reasons, both server-sided (webserver setup-related, not coppermine related) as well as client-sided (your connection speed differing for upstreams, your browser getting updated etc.). None of those factors is being controlled by Coppermine, and there are a lot of factors that interact. This being said: we can hardly help you with that. You (as coppermine admin) are suppossed to FTP upload plus batch-add anyway. Be glad that things used to work in the past for such huge files (it's an exception that you have been able to upload such large files). Now it's time to look into FTP uploading: it's faster and easier if you ask me. It's the prefered upload method for the admin. Leave http uploads to "regular, non-admin users" if you allow others to upload in the first place. I can't think of anything else to recommend.
