Are there good alternatives to Coppermine?
For ages there haven't been new features, Web 2.0 is a something you would never associate with Coppermine, even creating RSS feeds is a pain, SPAM protection is barely existent.
Don't get me wrong: I appreciate the work that has been done and I will never be able to create something like Coppermine on my own. But it doesn't look like a project with a future. Web development is something that undergoes permanent changes and most of those changes have never touched Coppermine and - what is even worse - it does not seem to change.
I would like to move to something with active development.
Thanks for any hints.

We only have a small group of developers now and we do this in our spare time.
If you don't like something you're welcome to contribute a plugin/hack/theme or whatever fixes your woes.

Maybe you've just setup your gallery wrong, but it's possible to use Coppermine as a "web 2.0" platform (upload own files, adding comments, rating, ...).

There several ready RSS/Atom plugins you just need to install. ::)

Zen Photo, Menalto Gallery (aka 'Gallery), and Piwigo are some pretty good choices. I've always paid close attention to Piwigo, since they seem to be under pretty constant development.
You can also think about some full-featured community suites like vBulletin or InvisionPowerBoard, which include a gallery application as one component of their suite. They're paid, but as someone who recently switched over to IPB from SimpleMachinesForum, I couldn't be happier.
