has been up and working fine for some time now, but the owners contact me today and said people haven't been able to view the pics recently.
Seemingly Randomly, a user (registered or anon) gets this error msg:
Coppermine critical error:
Unable to connect to database !
MySQL said: Lost connection to MySQL server during query
On anything from logging in, to making group changes, to viweeing individual pics, to the most viewed page. everything that's related to the SQL db I guess. I'm not too versed in PHP
What should I do/look for?

if the server is yours to administer, check the server logs. If it isn't, contact your webhost - my guess is the mySQL service runs on overload on the server. This is mostly caused by having to many virtual hosts on one machine, or by improper server setup.
