In admin mode, click on Users. Edit the pertinent user and select Administrators in user groups. Click on the Modify User button

If I understand this correctly you have FTP access to the site, but no coppermine admin account, so your question is "how do I create a coppermine admin account?" (or "how do I modify my user account to become and admin account?"). The answer is: with FTP alone, you can't. You will have to use a software like phpMyAdmin that let's you access the database (such a software can be uploaded using your ftp account though if you don't already have it). Using phpMyAdmin, you should browse the user table. A coppermine user account differs from the admin account by group membership: and admin is in user group "1", a regular user is in group "2". All you have to do is create a user account (if you don't have one already) and change the "user_group" to "1" for this particular user.
Mind you, to install phpMyAdmin you'll need to know your mySQL settings - the fact that you needed a friend to install coppermine for you might indicate that you're new to this sort of stuff, so be extra carefull if you try this - modifying your database directly using phpMyAdmin can be risky if you don't know your way around...

If your friend setup coppermine to use your email account then you could use the forgot password feature on the login page.
