I am finding there is a problem with SEO of Coppermine galleries in the sense that there is a large amount of duplicate content showing up for sites using Coppermine.

Duplicate content within or outside of a web site is a big negative from Google's point of view. Content that is duplicated tends to do more poorly in Google search results.

Using Google Webmaster Tools you can see that there is a large amount of duplicate content showing up even for galleries that have done some SEO. A large amount of this duplication is caused by the same images showing up multiple times under the different sections for "Most Viewed", "Last Uploaded", "Random" and "Last Comments". One option is to remove these albums so the Google bot doesn't see them and there are tools to do this, but it may detract from many of the good functions of Coppermine.

An alternative would be to include the meta tag ("name="ROBOTS" content="NOINDEX") via the theme system only to "Most Viewed", "Last Uploaded", "Random" and "Last Comments".

Now while I understand the concept here, I have no idea how to implement this. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks Jeff.

The terminology used explains why it didn't come up when I searched.

No sure that I am ready to upgrade yet as my gallery is heavily customised.

This is very interesting. Is it on by default in 1.5? I upgraded from 1.4 quite a while ago... will I need to make any changes or will this change have been already made?

Thanks :)
