I searched but found no mention of this anywhere and have no idea whom else to ask. It seems like such a trivial matter however incures major malfunctions and a complete inability to run even the first step of uploading the files. Here is the problem: In my ftp (and I have tried two different ftp's), when I go to change the folder permissions to 777 or even 755 the folders automatically convert back to 666? I can apply the change, meaning I can press the damn button, but the permissions never change. I have never seen this before. All the albums I try to change do the same thing. I am stuck in the setting up phase and am having no fun with my photos as yet. And Yes I have read the docs files front to back and cannot find anything to help me with such an outrageously miniscule problem yet one that is causing massive headaches.

Any help please.
Your understanding is appreciated.

You can't change permision on windwos box this way , make sure you are not on windows server (you should ask your host for support if you are on windows server)
and try using hosting control panel file tools if you have

Cheers mate. I have emailed my host to see if we are using a windows server. If we are does this mean that only the host can change permissions? I have tried to change them already through the host control panel but couldn't do this either. I'll await the reply from the host and see what happens.
Thanks again.

here is a Tutorial of how to change permissions on windows , as you can see you need admin privileges on server to do that

Thank you mate. I had a look at the tutorial but the thing is I am running a MAC. Does this tutorial have to do with what the server is running or what I am running?

This is about the server not your local computer

As I thought. Cheers.
So my server got back to me and he reckons that there is no way to change permissions. Is this just him being lazy and not wanting to do it? From that tutorial it looks like it is hey. Where do I go from here? Give my server the list of folders I want permissions changed on and ask him to do it? Is there anyway for me to do it from my here?

Thank you again for your patience and your advice.

Sorry but you can't change permission without having access directly to win servers , I think it's better to look for better host , this is they job to privide a control panel tool to change permission on windows box or at least change it for you manualy

Thanks mate. I have emailed them to see if they will do it manually. It's funny that you have mentioned new hosting, because that's exactly what I've been thinking lately too.

Cheers for your help. I guess this problem is officially solved. Or at least you've done what you could. Thanks again for looking after me mate. I just hope that I can use coppermine after all.

I am re-opening the case!
This just in: My server reckons "You can't change the chmod on windows but all folders should be able to read and write to anyway so there is no need to set any different permissions for the script to work." Please tell me this is a load of nasty childish lies and nothing more than an excuse to palm an inocent neophyte away from the world of servers and the internet!? Can I go back on this? Or do I cop another painfull blow from an organisation who takes my money yet provides less than the required service?

Can it be done? Or are His words true?

What you looking for? Whether it will work with the permissions as they are at 666?

Zee

Sami

no it didn't even installed with 666 , but usually ftp client didn't gave you true info about permission
can you upload a pic or not ?
If you have a upload problem , post a test (non-admin) account ....

I don't know what that means or how to do that. I am getting over the whole thing now. I have asked the server one last time if he will change the persmission. If this doesn't work then I will scrap coppermine and look elsewhere. It sucks because this application looks so good.

Thanks for your help. Fingers crossed the server has a heart.
