I have some family pictures I want to share just for the users added with my family group. So I set the album permission to be read by the family group. But then all the thumbs also disappear from all other users.

Is there a way others can see the thumbs but only the members of the correct group can get to watch the medium and large?

See this thread for how to do that, http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/oldboard/viewtopic.php?t=1380.

Change the, 'You need to register to access this page', to 'This image is only available to family members', or something like that.
It has been a long time now since I did my little bit here, and have done no coding or any other such stuff since. I'm back to being a noob here

No, this is not the right thing. I also have this function allready, but:

I did make a family group. Then I did set some albums to only be viewed by this group. But then the entire album is invisible for all others who are not in this group. I want all others to see the album and the thumbs, but get denied the medium and large pictures if they arent in the family group.

The thread you did post is doing almost what i want, but it only does tell people that are not logged in a message. I want to do almost the same, but for people with the wrong group memberships. (and they must also be able to watch the thumbs for the albums with the memberships that they do not have)
