Hello.

I need to insert links to my other sites. Ideally, they should be seen
1) in main user menu
2) in the 'gallery description' field at the top of each page and/or
3) under each picture and/or

I have searched for a while but didn't find that answered.

I found a guy who did added links to the menu (just to prove it's possible): http://www.yenlyma.com/pm/

Thanks in advance.

To add links into the menu, edit your theme.php, as shown here for the classic theme;

<span class="topmenu">

<a href="your-firstlink-url" title="your-first-link-name">your-first-link-name</a> ::
<a href="your-secondlink-url" title="your-second-link-name">your-second-link-name</a> ::

<!-- BEGIN album_list -->
                        <a href="{ALB_LIST_TGT}" title="{ALB_LIST_TITLE}">{ALB_LIST_LNK}</a> ::
<!-- END album_list -->
<!-- BEGIN my_gallery -->
                        <a href="{MY_GAL_TGT}" title="{MY_GAL_TITLE}">{MY_GAL_LNK}</a> ::
<!-- END my_gallery -->
<!-- BEGIN allow_memberlist -->
                        <a href="{MEMBERLIST_TGT}" title="{MEMBERLIST_TITLE}">{MEMBERLIST_LNK}</a>  ::
<!-- END allow_memberlist -->

To add links into album or pic descriptions, see these sections of the faq;

It has been a long time now since I did my little bit here, and have done no coding or any other such stuff since. I'm back to being a noob here

With the link you posted, the admin has added the links into the template.html instead, which is also a valid method.
