After deciding to give CPG a try I signed up with a web host today, downloaded cpg, unziped it and uploaded it via ftp. Attended to the album and included files (although I didn' get the second option) logged out and tried to install from my browser with http://www.denisg.co.uk/coppermine_dir/install.php. All I get is a 404 File not found error but I know its there!

Host is http://www.qiq.co.uk/technology1.php#

php; 4.3.10
perl; 5.008
mysql; 4.1.8
gd; 2.0.28 (compatible)
asp; 4.0.1L

Can anyone help please?

Denis.

Is the name of your coppermine folder really coppermine_dir?

DenisG

No, just Coppermine, but following the documentation destructions ;) it says use http://your_server/coppermine_dir/install.php.

Denis

coppermine_dir is just a placeholder, like your_server

Neither coppermine nor Coppermine worked. Please specify the actual coppermine folder with correct capitalization.

DenisG

Thanks, but before I approached the forum I tried every connotation I could think of. Now I am a pure novice here, a little long in the tooth perhaps. A friend loaned me some space on his server with CPG to play with ie http://www.denis.phocus-on.co.uk/gallery/index.php and I liked it as a replacement for pbase ie http://www.pbase.com/denisg . The gallery side should not be an initial problem for me. The new host gallery I set up today is denisg.co.uk. Once set up I opened SmartFTP and conected to this new and completely empty site except for an introductory welcome page Index.html in folder Public_html. Once Smart had logged in there was the main folder FTP.denisg.co.uk which contained cgi-bin, mivadata and public_html. CPG was uploaded directly to ftp.denisg.co.uk folder as Coppermine, was this correct?

However, www.denisg.co.uk/Coppermine/Install.php or ftp.denisg.co.uk/Coppermine/Install.php both result in 404 error. What am I missing here?.

Did you put Coppermine folder into public_html? That's where it should go.

If your server OS is case-sensitive, install.php is seen as a different file from Install.php

DenisG

Now we're getting somewhere. Moved cpg to Public folder and got a response, not what I wanted but I know we are nearly there!

So what permission problem "A file permissions error has occurred. Please check the permissions on the script and the directory it is in and try again."

You should read through the documentation...

Read this, especially the part about CHMODS:
http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/manual.php#how

You need to CHMOD the directories ALBUMS, INCLUDE, USERPICS and EDIT to 777. The last to folders are inside the albums folder.

Gaz, they all are 777. Using SmartFTP you don't get the second option as in the demo. You do get three additional boxes for SET:UID, GID and Sticky. These are currently un-ticked. Help has no indication as to what these are for.

Denis

Gas

The Values Sticky, Set GID and Set UID must be UNticked, so that is correct.

Re-Check your CHMODs, SmartFTP sometimes doesn't set it correctly. And set all folders IN your album-directory (userpic and edit) to 777, too. This is not written in the documentation.

If you are able to give me a test FTP Account (or at least an URL to your install script), i can look what's wrong. You can send me by PM if you want.

DenisG

Checked em all Gas, all 777's. Gave up, went to bed :D. Same thing this morning, see your IM

unfortunately your isp seems to block my IP Range, as i cant get in neither by FTP or in the control panel. Did you check that the other files /directories of coppermine have execution rights (755)?

DenisG

The folders discussed earlier are all 777. All other folders are 755. All files within the folders appear to be 644's except for themes where thay are all 755's. I dont think the install.php file is the problem as I get the same message just using /Coppermine after the normal url. The file manager indicates the Coppermine folder as also being 777.

Have you asked your host about your permission problems?  They may be able to do something to help you out.
Do not send me a private message unless I ask for one.  Make your post public so everyone can benefit.

There are no stupid questions
But there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots

don't "trust" the information your ftp shows you - on some configurations, the actual permissions aren't displayed properly. Even if a folder appears to be CHMODed one way or the other, apply the permission you want it to have to the folder, don't just check the permissions.

SOLVED[/i] :D :D

Not sure how after chopping and changing chmods but it all seemed to come together changing 'Coppermine' folder to 755. So, many many thanks folks, the help really is most appreciated.
