How do I activate the wizard when upgrading?

My apologies if someone has asked this before, but I looked for other threads about this problem and couldn't find any.

My Coppermine gallery ( http://www.snakebird.net/gallery/ ) is bridged with an SMF forum ( www.snakebird.net/polaris ).  Normally when I upgrade the forum, all I need to do in order to re-activate the bridge is make the necessary changes to smf.inc.php and init.inc.php.  However, it seems that CPG 1.4 has a new system in which I need to log into my administrator before activating the bridge.  The problem is that since this is an upgrade, I'm not able to create a new administrator account the way I could with a fresh install, and I can't use my existing administrator account because the bridge hasn't been activated yet.

What's the best way for me to activate the bridge in this situation?

I've created a test account at the gallery for troubleshooting purposes, with the username "Test" and the password "coppermine".

you need to specify the admin account of your standalone, unbridged coppermine (usually the one you set up during coppermine's install).

I never set one up.  I installed Coppermine using Fantastico, and it was a bit of a problem at first that the database started out completely empty.  I only repaired enough of that to successfully integrate it with SMF.

What's the best way for me to activate the bridge in this situation?  Is it possible for me to do it just by editing certain PHP scripts, the way I could with version 3?

EDIT:  I'm not sure if this is the reason why it doesn't have an admin account independent of the forum, but it definitely doesn't.  The only account for which it recognizes my e-mail address is the "test" one I just created.

Don't use Fantastico, it is buggy. Upgrade to cpg1.4.3. I have no idea what you did to fix your broken install, so it's hard to advice.

1.4.3 is what I'm currently upgrading to.  My problem with Fantastico is described in these two threads: http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=19738.msg9064 and http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=19765.msg90662 .  Basically, Fantastico installed Coppermine with most of the database tables empty.

I know Fantastico has some problems with it, but when I try to install any sort of large program on my domain manually, the connection almost always times out partway through the operation.  So I'd still prefer to work around whatever problems Fantastico has introduced, if it's possible.

I don't understand at all. Is the FTP connection timing out? Does your connection to the internet break down (ISP issue then) or does the webserver some "auto-closing" (in that case, contact your webhost for support or find a better webhost). Anyway, those issues are not related to coppermine itself.

I suggest you fix those initial issues instead of finding a workaround for a workaround. You will need cpg1.4.3 if you want bridging to work. Cpg1.4.2 contains known bugs, that's why we released cpg1.4.3.
