Open images in a new window directly from thumbnails

I'd like to customize my gallery to have images open in a new window, directly from the thumbnails without the intermediate size image display page.

It has been done, and it works on cpg 1.3.x, as can be seen here:

But I couldn't figure out how it was done.  I've searched the boards for other solutions, couldn't find any.
How would it be done on 1.4.x ?

I recommend changing the subject name of the topic you forwarded me to, since it doesn't clearly represent it. 
"Intermediate page in popup" is not what they are talking about, but rather full size image pop ups from thumbnails ...

I also think it would be a good idea to add an option like this as part of the config.

(of course admin-settable). Will be available in cpg1.5.x
