Files larger after upload?

I am currently always running out of space at my webhost and wondered why that is because I always make my images smaller, now I checked in the ftp and realized that my files get way bigger after I uploaded them!

How can that happen and what can I do against it?

Are you using watermarking or something? Post a link to your gallery.

yes I do  But I am afraid that if I put the quality of the images in coppermine down they will look bad

What did you set the quality to? Setting it high will make the images larger - that is to be expected.

When picking one image randomly (http://www.youknowyouloveme.org/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-27170) and taking a look at your settings I find them quite wrong:

• Thumbnail 100 x 130
• Intermediate 266 x 399
• Full-Size 2000 x 3000, 669 KB

The full-sized image is needlessly large and will consume way too much space. You can save most webspace if you resize your originals to a resolution that makes sense for usage on the internet (e.g. 1280 pixels max dimension). Best solution would be to resize on your client before uploading, second best solution is enabling the corresponding option in coppermine. Applying the watermark on the client will be easier as well.
Using the watermark the way you have set up your gallery is senseless: people who want to steal your content will just crop your watermarked full-size and thus obtain an unwatermarked high-res pic with just 52 pixels out of 3000 cut off at the bottom.
