I'm no expert, as some of you know, but I managed to fix the problem and thought posting this might help other people who get the same error.

I was originally running 1.4.27 and downloaded the latest version of 1.5.6. Following the upgrade instructions in the documentation, the 1.4.27 files & folders not needed were removed and the 1.5.6 files & folders uploaded. When I ran the update script the result was a page that just said "Fatal Error".

I searched the forum for possible solutions and found this topic:-
http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php/topic,65521.0.html

I followed instructions to enable_debug mode and my report appeared to be the same as in that topic.

One suggestion was to use phpMyAdmin to repair the table using the "Repair Table" prompt. I tried the "repair" option then ran the update script & it worked, the gallery is working.

I needed to do a few internet searches to learn a bit more about phpMyAdmin, as my previous knowledge was limited to backups & restores, but at least it meant I didn't have to ask for assistance here.

Hope GauGau doesn't mind me posting this topic, but it might mean less requests for help from others with the same problem. All I need to do now is mark it as "solved".

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Unfortunately a lot of people posting here haven't read the docs nor searched the forum. So we'll see if the support requests for this issue will decrease :)
