There have been many submissions when we asked users to come up with logos/banners for coppermine (see Logo & Logo Design).
It's time to start a little competition: choose your favorite banner for coppermine (the "winner" will be shipped with the next coppermine release and will become the "official" coppermine logo).
If there have been various submissions with similar pics that only differ in small details I summed them up into one item, so they won't "steal" votes from each other...

Please make your decision:[list=1]

I know it's probably a little late for this but I'll share my thoughts anyway.

Although I have a lot of respect for all of those that have participated (they sure have done a lot more than I did), I feel none of them managed to get it right.

The challenge was creating an image that represents a web picture gallery script called Coppermine with "your online photo album" as a slogan.

If you take the name and slogan out of the above images, there's no connection between the remaining image with a "online photo album" or a "web picture gallery script".
You can relate some with photos or photography but nothing more.

If you dissect the slogan into concepts, you have "online" and "photo album". These are the major guidelines for producing an image that represents CPG.

I've quickly sketched an image that aggregates these two concepts and although is very poor and unpolished, you can get the idea of what I mean

The gray element is a browser window, still one of the best ways to represent the online concept.

This isn't the "official point of view", you can explore this in a considerable number of ways.
Unfortunately, I don't have time to do it but maybe someone can take this some steps further.

Let me end by saying that I have no intention of disrespecting anyone or anyone's work. I'm just venting my thoughts and expressing my opinion.

PS: an icon that shares this approach is Apple's HomePage icon used in .Mac

Hi!

Quote from: "rbl"The challenge was creating an image that represents a web picture gallery script called Coppermine with "your online photo album" as a slogan.

Well, I'll play devil's advocate here. I think the challenge was to come up with a Logo for Coppermine. How is that different than "an image that represents a web picture gallery?"

Consider the logo for Nike, or the logo for Apple computer. The only reason you might think that the Nike "swoosh" represents shoes or that the apple symbol represents computers is that they have been advertised. They could just as well represent refrigerators, airplane wings, or hair products. The meaning of the logo comes from the association -- and the association is made by advertising.

So if, in fact, the challege was to create a Logo, then a literal representation is not (as) important.

That all being said, I agree that none of the entries, mine included, capture the spirit of Coppermine. But then, typically, corporations spend a lot of time and money figuring out exactly what they want their logos to express, and go through focus testing, etc. I'm not sure I like the approach I took of playing off the name, but I also didn't want to be too literal. So there you have it ;)

Hi!
How is that different? In part, there isn't any difference at all because for a small minority (us, the users), Coppermine means a "web picture gallery". But for the vast majority, Coppermine means nothing at all. It can be anything and that is the reason why the logo should communicate all valid and wanted concepts to that audience.

You can't compare logos like nike's and apple's to coppermine's! Apple's logo has been around for ± 25 years and has evolved through the years into what you know today. Nike's swoosh is also very recent. Only in recent years they took the word "nike" from above it.
These two brands "sold" you the idea (through many of years of advertising) that Apple means computers and Nike means shoes, so they can use a very simplified logo because they "earned the right" to it.

Coppermine does not have the means to advertise itself like apple or nike, so you can't follow Amazon's example and steal a few years from brand recognition rate like they are doing.

Your point is valid as long as you are talking about trillion USD advertising campaings, and that is hardly the case here.

Like I said, I do not own the official point of view or even reason itself.
But in the meanwhile I think that we should use every means available to pass the message ("your online photo album") and that includes a "dumb" logo like the one I've sketched.
Then, later on, we can have our own swoosh =)

Jeremy

I like #12

The logo concept of the film strip and the mine symbol is good and a nice base to start from I think the text of the Coppermine word could use a bit of work.

But over-all it's a good starting base for a easily recognizable logo, that can be used in many different sizes easily.

just my 2 cents

*edit:/ as a side not I think any logo using an image designed by someonelse other then the artisit should be taken out of the running... how can you seriously consider any logo that is using graphics designed by Apple for their OS...??

"What should become the "official" coppermine logo/banner?"

Good lord, not any of mine. I go away for a few months and find those old things in a comp. I diddled them up in about 5 minutes.

Think seriously before voting for me.

MaThIbUs

This is so difficult! I mean, they're all different...

#8 for example is an image in the smallest button size format, which is great for linking to coppermine.sf.net, but not for a page header logo imho...

edit: image sizes

  • mini-button: 80×31
  • button: 88×31
  • mini-banner: 156×60
  • half-size banner: 234×60
  • full-size banner: 468×60[/list:u]

Jet_Jaguar

I voted for 4, since it conveyed to me what coppermine was all about.  Coppermine is becoming more popular, but I don't think it's so popular that instantly giving  a correct impression wouldn't be very useful.

The others, eh:  1 looks too much like PHPBB, (and coppermine needs it's own identity.) 15 is just the Coca-cola logo in the different color, 7 looks too much like the old photoshop logo. 5 doesn't convey "photo album" and furthermore, the font isn't readable enough.

Indeed, #4 is very nice, if not the nicest of all. "Your photos on your website", that's what CPG is all about!

I don't agree with you because i made #9 with about 40 layers.
The border of the second and third image are 3D shapes created in Paint Shop Pro including shadow etc.

The actual image was about 2000x800 pixels for an awesome view.
Then shrinked to fit.

The good thing of such a large image is that you can easily produce it on a T-Shirt or banner without losing image quality by magnify'ing.

Not sure if you're still looking for input, but I'm a new switcher to Coppermine from Gallery and I tend to have a nack for logo's and design overall.  That's what I do for a living.

My overall sight is kind of awol during redevelopment, but here's a link to some logo work and other stuff.

Just thought I'd make a general offer.  I'm currently coming to terms with the in's and outs of Coppermine in order to reface my gallery(http://www.artdroid.com/coppermine), but I could delay that a bit to help the cause visually if it is still needed,  wanted,  and the commitment of time would be appreciated.

Just drop me a reply or message if interested.

Hope you like them :)  All PNG format, but used a filter for the glassy effect.  The logo (the orange C) was developed by myself, and was something I thought looked clean and sharp.

Thank You

I like the slick look.   But the "c" logo is basically your "descriva" logo turned 180 degrees isn't it?   But again... I like the slick feel. That's not a direction I would have gone in.

Its not my descriva logo at all.... its something seperate completely....

And the slick feel was just some expirementing thats all  :P

I think the Coppermine banner/logo shouldn't be a long visible rectangle actually, its background should match the background color of where its placed.  Maybe I'll make some different logos now that I don't want my slick feel

Sorry,  I just gotta point this out.   I rotated your descriva logo 180 degrees and placed it beside your coppermine symbol.

again... I like the feel...  just thought it was very similar to your other symbol.
