Total number of pix included in all sub-cats and albums...

I have a rather large gallery, and some of my categories on the main page just lead to a selection of more categories. Is there a way to have the topmost category show the TOTAL number of pictures in the cat... including the sub-cats and their albums?

Is there a pre-existing hack that might allow for these numbers to show up in the parent category?
