I have a coppermine 1.3.3 photo album that I would like to make 1.4.4
I have had such difficutly in testing the upgrade process that I do not even want to attempt it on my 'live' system.
I have a complete backup of the 1.3.3 database and all the photos (/albums/ directory)
Can I just perform a fresh install of 1.4.4 using this database and albums?
thanks

No, the database needs to be updated by the updater to work with 1.4.4. Use the update procedure.

Teune

Well in desperation, I wiped out all the files except the album directory, uploaded all the 1.4.4 files, ran update.php.
Except for a couple things in the themes, I am good to go.
I am very comfortable fixing/customizing the theme files, so for me, this is definitely the way to upgrade to a newer version. The documented way is not very good, IMHO.
I love the software and you guys have GREAT support here, but I am completely spoiled by simplemachines forum, two clicks and I'm upgraded.

What's the actual difference between your method and the one we recommend? We say to replace everything but the albums folder (and anycontent.php if you have modified it) with the new files. You chose the method to delete all files except the albums folder and then upload all new files from the package - I can't see a great difference except that (if you actually did what you claim to have done) your gallery certainly wasn't operational any longer, because you shouldn't have deleted the files include/config.inc.php and include/install.lock
In fact the issue you experienced definitely must be related to the fact that the files didn't get replaced properly in the first place (either FTP-client config setting or webserver FTP setup)

Woah, GauGau, dude, take a chill pill.

you are getting the sequence of what happened with me mixed up.
The site died first. At the same time, I was testing upgrading on a test site and couldn't get it to work. Then since my regular site was already not functioning (without me doing anything at all to it) I then decided to try deleting everything on the regular site and just upload... well I already explained that.
The upgrade process for Coppermine is awkward. That's all I am saying. Most other PHP web-based software I use has a better upgrade process. It doesn't matter. I LOVE Coppermine. Let me repeat that. I LOVE COPPERMINE!  I use it on every customer's site. EVERY ONE. So I am willing to jump through some hoops, overwrite everything except a couple files then run update.php, etc., oops, that didn't work for some reason, ok try this instead.. kind of stuff.

Thanks again for great software and wonderful support. Just allow me to vent a bit about a somewhat awkward process ok? That's what cusotomers do once in a while.  ;D

my reply was meant to tell others who're looking for help on similar issues that deleting everything except the albums folder is not an option. If it worked for you in your particular situation, that's fine. However, you chose to post your "solution" on two threads, so I issued a warning to others - no hard feelings against you or your method: if it worked for you, that's just fine.
I know that SMF has an upgrade process using package servers, but I'm shying away from that, as I'm aware that there were huge issues with the updates from package servers a while ago. YaBB SE had another setup process: it came with a server-sided un-archiver; this was dropped for good reasons as well.
I'm currently re-doing the installer for cpg1.5.x, with xml files keeping track of versions.

Teune

Cool, I understand and definitely no hard feelings at all.
My apologies for cross posting, it did start as two different sites and two different issues for me, but in the end, it ended up the same thing.
I will avoid multiple posts and suggesting solutions in the future.
I'll leave that up to you.
thanks again for great support and a great product!

then start a new thread on the proper board (the one that deals with your version) on this totally unrelated issue.

no and no: it's not mandatory to upgrade to cpg1.4.x, but you should upgrade at least to cpg1.3.5 and apply all patches. No, there's no such thing as cpg1.5.x available yet.

There's an upgrading section in the docs that come with the package that is available online as well (link to docs at top of this page).

Do not hijack other's threads. Locking this one now.
