Are .gif files not supported in Coppermine? I uploaded several and they won't upload to the album.

.gif is supported by coppermine, but may not be supported by the image library you use. There's only limited support for animated gifs, and there is no support for gif when using outdated versions of GD.
Attach the gif file you tried to upload to your reply (using "additional options" when composing your message) and do as suggested in  http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/docs/index.htm#upload_trouble

I don't have GD or ImageMagick installed...  I downloaded Imagemagick and read their site but I can't figure out how to install it.

It's just smilies that I wanted to upload.

You need either GD or ImageMagick, coppermine doesn't work if you don't have one of those libraries. If you're webhosted, you can't install ImageMagick. Please refer to the FAQ for details.

Okay so since I pay for webhosting I need to use GD if it's supported ?  That's what I got from the FAQ.
My gallery works otherwise.

I'll check into the GD thing some more, thanks!

Being on paid webhosting doesn't mean that you necessarily have GD, nor does unpaid webhosting mean that you don't have GD. Try to find out if you have GD by doing as suggested in the FAQ. If you don't have GD nor ImageMagick, then you have three options:
* ask your webhost to install GD for you
* find a webhost that has GD support
* use another gallery app that doesn't need GD
