If someone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction, I'd like to start working on a plugin to provide video preroll functionality. (ie - the video ads that show up before you get to watch the actual video)

I guess the first step is this... how do I access the media functions, but still stay within the plugin API? (rather than modifying core files, etc.)
