Yes this webhost sucks, I've read the Faq and modified init.inc.php

upon running install.php, the following error occurs :
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: rmdir() in /.../install.php on line 119

The safe mode is on and probably misconfigured. The host won't allow to chmod any directory to 777 either.

I just want to check if there is something else to try, or if it's worthless.

try to turn on "silly_safe_mode" (refer to the documentation that comes with coppermine how to do this).
