customizing the front page - category, Random files, last additions

I have looked over this forum for the answer, i have also searched the files and cannot find the code that generates the table on the front page which displays the categories, Random files and last additions on the front page. Also how can i control the maximum amount of rows and column length for each section.

In short i want to layout the front page differently, by placing the last additions and random files side by side and categories above?

Can't be accomplished without you performing in-depth core code changes.

where is the table that generates the random files and last additions? i want to add images as headings rather then the text?

Take a look at the case selectors in index.php. Unless you're a coder, this won't tell you much though.
