When creating an album, there should be a way to create a directory and set the correct permissions (eg; 777/755) so that uploads via script go to this directory.
it should also copy/create index.html to avoid directory snooping (yes, I know, a properly configured .htaccess will fix this as well)

Nibbler

Uploads all go into userpics, there is not a separate directory created for every album.

I beleive that was the purpose of my post... to request such a feature ;)

Sorry, this isn't going to be a feature of Coppermine.  We don't see the need for Coppermine to create unnecessary directories, attempting to mirror the database album and category structure.  If a user desires to mirror the structure, he/she can manually create directories.
Do not send me a private message unless I ask for one.  Make your post public so everyone can benefit.

Other features that are being worked on such as a single image being in multiple albums would foul up your directory structure anyway.

in the end, yes it would make it difficult, but the image could still be placed in the "first" album's folder. This would simplify the user directory... eg; each users pics are first uploaded to thier directory and from there linked to multiple albums.

That's the same as donnoman says. Uploading one pic and making it end up in several albums is not the same as what you asked for i.e. the automaticly generating of new folders etc ones a users uploads pics. As Nibbler pointed out this is not going to happen. Personally i think the adding of new folders etc should be done by the moderators or admins of a gallery who have the ftp access. Certainly not by users of a gallery.
