Default picture size

I've played around with the Max width or height of an intermediate picture/video option and changed it to 1200. Can anyone tell me what the default was? I think it's tied to the problem I have whereby I don't want users to be able to view the full size original image as it takes up too much space on the screen. I just want them to see one that fits on the screen.

Can anyone tell me if what I'm thinking of changing is what I should be changing and if not how to acheive what I'm trying to do?
