so far, if a user is online you can only view their name, how about a link in their name to a private message?

Knowing the mods and admin team, its probably in the pipeline already.

Sorry, there are no plans to make Coppermine into a BBS.  If you want the ability to send a private message to a user, bridge Coppermine with your favorite bbs.
