I'm new to the forum and to Coppermine, so my apologies if this has already been answered or is in the wrong section.  However, in slideshow view, at the top of the page a lot of information is displayed - such as the album name and tagline, along with a set of hyperlinks:

Album list  Register  Login
Last uploads  Last comments  Most viewed  Top rated  My Favorites  Search

Due to the display of these links or menus, much of the photo is below the bottom of the screen and requires the viewer to scroll down to see it.  The filmstrip is completely off the page.  Is there a way to minimize or hide the header information so that the picture and filmstrip are viewable?  Another thought would be to move all of that info to the bottom of the screen?

Any help would be appreciated!

That's the coppermine menu you're refering to - move it to the bottom permanently by modifying themes/yourtheme/template.html - all caveats apply that apply to right-handed menus as well - see http://coppermine.sourceforge.net/faq.php#rightHandMenu
There are a lot of other options to accomplish what you're up to, all of them being related to a custom theme, e.g. right- or left-handed menu, vertical filmstrip, pop-up menus etc.
As only the image is being loaded during the slideshow, the user just has to scroll down a bit once, so I can't see a big drawback of the menu occupying a section at the top of the screen - usually cutom banners and such stuff need more space. You could take a look at minimalistic themes as well, like condensed grey...
As you can see, there are a lot of options...
