I completely understand the requirements - but I need to know how much available RAM memory my server needs.

My host has allocated 256MB guaranteed on my server but they have informed me that Coppermine 1.3.2 needs at least 200MB RAM available on the server. Because I already have about 50MB in use, Coppermine won't work (they tell me).

Is this true?  Please confirm. Thank you so much!

I do not know on what OS your webserver runs.. however a good OS usually hasn't free ram. All's used. For coppermine's ram usage. It depends... but that it at least needs 200mb is bull. If there's just one user browsing the gallery it doesn't need much. If you upload a pic then it may be that you need the max mem for a php instance (usually 8mb, depends on server settings). For standard browsing you'll never reach the php mem limit. So it's no problem for a good bunch of users to surf simulatnously the gallery without needing more than 200mb mem

I still don't understand the 'I already have about 50MB in use' part. As said.. you shouldn't have any free ram. Free ram is a waste and used for caching

I'm wondering if RAM is being confused with storage space.

The OS is RED-HAT 9 - Linux 2.4.20-021stab028.3.777-enterprise

This was an exceprt of the host's reply to me. And YES I am talking about RAM and not storgage. They said "I'm running out of available memory". For storage, I still have 5 Gigs left.
------------------
It appears you have run out of memory:
2005-10-19 19:57:17 GMT 3936 Ok oomguarpages
2005-10-19 19:57:07 GMT 3936 90% of Barrier was reached oomguarpages
------------------
You will need to move to a dedicated server to use all the
functinoality of the services you are trying to run. In additon, there were no
tables created for Coppermine, if you reattribute your resources, you will
have to remove and reinstall Coppermine.
