Getting this error

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_LNUMBER, expecting T_VARIABLE or '$' in

I am trying to integrate Coppermine with SMF forum.  I have the following set in my smf.inc.php file:

define('SMF_DB_NAME', $user_221241); // The name of the database used by the board
define('SMF_DB_HOST', $localhost); // The name of the database server
define('SMF_DB_USERNAME', $221241_scrapsoup); // The username to use to connect to the database
define('SMF_DB_PASSWORD', $**********); // The password to use to connect to the database

It seems to have a problem with the username (DB_USERNAME) and I am not sure why.

From the SMF config settings:

Server on which the database resides:  10.0.11.40
Database Username:  221241_scrapsoup
Database Password: ***********
Database Name:  user_221241

Both work independently, but not bridged.  What am I doing wrong?
