Categories n Albums

Hi all

Need a little help. I am working on the SAMPLE theme and trying to display the Catagories horizontally on the top
i.e.  .:Trip to LA:. .:Trip to Egypt:. .:Trip to India:. .:Trip to Australia:.

when the catagory is clicked the corresponding album liks are displayed vertically on the left
i.e.
.:Pyramids:.
.:Cairo:.
.:Al-Fayum:.
.:Alex:.

All i have figured out till this moment is that each catagory needs a individual .php page
I tried searching in the forums but could not find anything regarding this .....

can any one point me the right direction ...?
