Initial image listing instead of images

As each of my image categories will have a large number of images is there any way to show an alphabetical list of image links without the images? When the visitor clicks a link they then see a full size image.

Surely this is not a difficult modification to make.
I am absolutely useless with this sort of thing but desperately need it.
Please help
