how to remove the user's ability to delete their own comments ?

This is actually pretty easy with a theme customization.  I'm assuming you don't want users to be able to edit their comments as well (since they could edit them to be blank, for example).  If you want them to have edit abilities, you'll have to modify what I show here.

The variable you want to customize is $template_image_comments.  If you don't have this variable in your theme.php, you normally would copy it from sample/theme.php and modify as desired.  If you don't have it already, skip that step and copy what I show in the box below.  If you do have this variable, modify what you have to match what I show (around the <!-- BEGIN buttons --> line):

Now when you are in "Admin Mode", you'll see the edit & delete buttons.  When you are in "User Mode", you won't, and users won't as well.
