Making Categories display like Albums

While I am posting questions I might as well post all of them.

I am trying to make my category list into a grid rather than a column like it is.  I would love for them to be displayed in 3 columns with just the title, thumbnail and description. 

I have each individual group prepared how I want in a table, now I just need to turn those tables into a grid rather than a column.  To see what I mean, try here:

I would like them to be in a grid like this, like Albums are displayed:

this thread describes how to have 3 category columns. However it's for 1.3.x and not for 1.4. Means you'll have to adapt it
