The common problem, so it seems.  I have read the posts on the forum, but am unable to fix this.  I have:

Followed the doc's upload trouble section.
Upgraded to the most recent version - 1.4.8.
Checked that bit of code in picmgmt is there.
Re-asigned 755 permissions to the albums dir and all sub dirs.

I have created a new registered account for testing:

username: test
password: test

with an album called test to upload files to.

Coppermine is at:

http://adamandnicky.com/pics

If you need any more info, please let me know.

All help is much appreciated,

cheers,

Adam

No, you have not. Set the number of file upload fields to 1 and the number of uri upload fields to 0 on coppermine's groups page for the group the test user account is in (as suggested in the upload troubleshooting section). This way, we'll get an actual error message.
Make sure that you have applied permissions (CHMOD) on the albums folder and everything within it as suggested in the docs.

Done, although upon further investigation (from your notes).........

7. upload_tmp_dir - This specifies the temporary directory where PHP stores uploaded files.

The most common issue caused by this setting is an open_basedir warning.  In this situation, your server administrator has restricted the files that PHP can work with to a certain directory.  If he does not create and specify a temporary directory within the open_basedir restriction, PHP will attempt to use the OS temporary directory, and it will be rebuffed by the open_basedir restriction.

I think this could be the problem though.  I looked at the PHPinfo and these are set to no value.  Is this something overridable through coppermine, or something I need to get my hosting company change.  If it's the latter, seeing as they are somewhat useless, what would you recommend it is set to.

I assume (but we all know what that does) it was set before they upgraded PHP versions, as this problem has only recently occured, and the Build Date = Aug 14 2006 09:59:45

cheers......

Did you review your permissions?

Yup, and they were correct.

I have however sorted the problem.

My solution was to change the "Method for resizing images" under "Files and thumbnails advanced settings" to G.D 2.x.  I guess something was changed on my hosting server, as coppermine stopped working before I upgraded, so have no idea what it was set to before.

Thanks for looking into this, and feel free to close this.
