I would like to know how to display only categories list in the index.php file.

Check here in the manual for definitions and instructions - http://coppermine-gallery.net/demo/cpg14x/docs/index.htm#admin_album_list.

Login and go to Config=>Album list view=>The content of the main page=>breadcrumb/catlist.

Also, if you don't want any thumbnails to show on main page: Config=>Album list view=>Show first level album thumbnails in categories=No
Did you read the manual first???? Taking 2 minutes to backup your files can save you hours of wondering what you screwed up.

Erm no, this is not correct; in fact this is a bad idea: leave "catlist/alblist" in the field under all circumstances unless you're a real pro coder and know your way around. You can get rid of everything else (breadcrumb and all those meta albums), but don't remove catlist and alblist, they are mandatory or you will break Coppermine.
