Blank util.php page and failing versioncheck after upgrade...

I am using Coppermine with Stramm's modpack and encountered a problem when removing the watermark from the images (cf this topic, but i ll summarize short.

I restored the orig images after which i noticed the marks on the reduced size images weren't gone so i tried to rebuild these, but now util.php gives me a blank page (no timeout!) when trying to rebuild them. Actually the only option under "Update thumbs and/or resized photos" that still works is "Just full sized"....
In an attempt to fix this i updated to 1.4.10 + modpack, but the problem still exists (maybe something db related then ) and now the version check script keeps returning "The script made a boo, it was not able to retrieve any information. Sorry for the inconvenience.". Yet nothing changed to my host and according to phpinfo, allow_url_fopen is enabled.

Stramm said this was not cause by the modpack and told me to post it here...
Any help would be appreciated... if need be i can give login info...

I also forgot to mention i run it bridged with phpBB, but i don't think that would have anything to do with this...
