i currently have 100k+ images in 1200+ albums online  - does coppermine have any facilities to aid in importing?

You might want to check this out: http://cpg-contrib.org/board/index.php?PHPSESSID=062186948aa5e84a1037ad9b979c382c&board=25.0

A snippet from that site:
QuoteBased on a script by Nibbler called "timer.php", and then modified by several Coppermine supporters before being converted to this plugin for 1.4.x and later versions of Coppermine.

There are 3 major reasons you might want to use CPGMassImport instead of "batch adding".

    * You already have a directory structure and don't want to create the categories and albums any differently
    * You have a lot of images, and don't want to babysit the batch add process
    * CPGMassImport is less resource intensive on the web server than doing batch adds
