Insert content on home page only.

I would like to insert a couple of paragraphs of text on the homepage of my gallery - like an introductory welcome.

How can I insert some text so that it only shows on my homepage, and once you have clicked off of that page to not have it appear?

The reason i'm asking is that I put this text on my template.php file but obviously it applies to all pages so whatever page you are on the text is visible. I only want it to show at the top of my index.php file.

Can anyone help please?
