Can someone please tell me what the "pos" field does in the albums database?

I'm moving some albums out of user galleries and into a different category so have had to edit the database, the pos field seems to determine the order and I have reordewred them successfully, but want to know if there is anything I have to be careful of? When you make a new album in a new category it doesn't make the pos field for that album "1" so I am a bit confused by it.

Any help will be appreciated.
