My host doesn't have GD or ImageMagick. Is there a way I can get it to display thumbnails without having these?

You simply won't be able to use coppermine without one.

So you have 2 choices.  There are galleries out there that don't need either, but not as good as cpg IMHO, OR change to a webhost that does offer the basics needed for CPG.
It has been a long time now since I did my little bit here, and have done no coding or any other such stuff since. I'm back to being a noob here

Do hosts usually charge extra if you ask them to get it? Or is it impossible for them to get it if they don't have it already?

Casper

Everything that is needed for coppermine is freely available for all.  Some choose not to use them for various reasons, and some as a means of making charges.

But there are some free hosts who have all the necessary for free.
Most paid hosts have all the basics included.

There are a couple of threads about which are good hosts for cpg.

using GD or ImageMagick dramatically increases server load for webhosts (meaning they can put less virtual hosts on one machine), that's why most free or budget hosts restrict the usage of GD or ImageMgick: it's basically an economic question, not wether the software is available for free.
In my experience those few webhosts that offer everything that's needed to run coppermine suck on bandwidth, availability or have a high number of ads served to site visitors. Basically: what you pay for is what you get
