Problem with login screen

I have been running ver 1.4.12 since Sept,2007 and everything has been working just fine. This morning when I tried to login to my admin panel -using IE7- the login screen comes up and when I put in my username and password it takes me to the welcome screen. However, when I press continue, it reverts right back to the login screen. This happens whether I try to sign in as administrator or with another username.
I can get into the admin panel in Firefox, and Opera but at the login screen I get a warning in red that the browser does not support script cookies. However, when I proceed,everything seems to work.
Any help greatly appreciated. I do not have an extensive background with PHP so please be "gentle" with your answers.
