trying to upload single picture, i get this error:

PHP running on your server does not support the GD image library, check with your webhost if ImageMagick is installed

the image is a JPG, 640W, 150k.  
also, when i upload the pics via FTP, and try to do batch upload, their thumbnails don't show up...

any ideas?

take a look at the documentation and the faq: do you really have GD? What does phpinfo say? Also, search this board, this has been covered in detail...
