Fatal Error after upgrade

I just upgraded from 1.3 to 1.4.  I ran the update.php file and that seemed to work.  I got a lot of "already done" messages and a few "Ok" messages but when I try to go to the site I get a white screen with "Fatal Error :"

Any suggestions?

I don't know how to enable debugging if I can't get into the system.  The error is "Fatal Error :"  That is all there is.

Thank you I hadn't realized that was a link.  I am working on the myphpadmin.  The instuctions are not nearly as good as your instructions and I am struggling with it.  Hopefully I will figure it out and get it working.

I just realized now that debug is on, I get a message I can post here.  This is what it says when trying to run in debug:

You haven't upgraded properly. Re-read the instructions! You need to upload all files that come with cpg1.4.x. The sql files are still old as well as the docs folder. Haven't tested more...

That is odd.  I did upload them -- or more accurately I gave the instruction in FTP to upload them.  I did all the files in one big batch in FTP and assumed they had all uploaded.  Apparently there was an issue.  I am at work now with no access to upload the files.  When I get home I will do that.

You make the comment "Haven't tested more..."  I am not sure what you are telling me there.  Is there some testing I could have done to determine that or are you saying you just aren't doing more until I upload those files (which I would expect).  I just want to make sure I am doing everything I can rather than asking you to do things.

I am trying... Just not succeeding unfortunately.

By "haven't tested more" Joachim is saying he has checked some files and there is an obvious problem. He has told you what to do and doing so should fix your problems. There is no point him going through every file on your system checking what has suceeded and what has not, that is your job.

Each file has in its header the version details of that file. All the core files should be the same version. So if some files are at an earlier revision there is a problem. Try examining some of the files in folders Joachim mentioned with a text editor and you will see for yourself. If after upgrading again you still find those files are at the wrong revision you will know that something is not working with your ftp process and you will need to speak to your host or check/change ftp app (filezilla is my recomendation, google it).

Filezilla is what I am using actually.  I will look through all the files and see if there are others that didn't upload properly.

What a mess.  Half the files hadn't downloaded I didn't realize that.  I went through them all directory by directory and I think I got them all straightened out, but it still isn't working so maybe not.  I also realize that before I upgraded it was using a custom theme and I thought maybe that could be an issue so I used phpmyadmin to poke around to see where the theme was selected in the database but I couldn't find anything. 

So, it still isn't working.

You forgot to run update.php after uploading the files. I did that for you and now your home page is coming fine.

When I first loaded the files I did run that, I didn't think I should do it again after correcting the files.  I guess I should have.  Thank you. 

I still can not upload files, but that is another issue that is already being the discussed in the upload thread.

The sql file which updates the database was out of date initially and hence update.php was to be ran after correcting the files (which included the sql file).
