But I still need help. How can you determine which one you are using? I want to correct this on my gallery, because the gallery are coming out wrong color and bad quality.

Hi, go into config, and change from GD1 to GD2.  Upload a pic, and see if it comes out ok.
If it is ok, click on 're-size pictures', and use that to rebuild the thumbs and intermediate pics.  Do it one album at a time.
It has been a long time now since I did my little bit here, and have done no coding or any other such stuff since. I'm back to being a noob here
