Has anyone else been through this?  I'm getting a heap of requests for user registration with weird addresses such as klmnop123@......
or abcd56@.... 

It's obvious they're phoney but what could they possibly mean and/or why are they doing this?

Those are bots that are probing your site to see if registered users are allowed to do stuff like uploading or commenting. As you failed to do as suggested per board rules once more (posting a link to your gallery is mandatory in each and every support request thread no matter what), we can't tell you what they're are actually up to do ::).
You have been around so long and you have been told about board rules so often: I'm starting to get tired having to repeat that over and over again. Respect board rules in the future or stop using this board!
