Blank page when I try to "create new user"

I have had version 1.4.26 running for a long time - very little used and no admin work on it.

I recently had occasion to 'create new user' but when I had filled the form in and hit 'submit', I just got a blank page in my browser and no new user is being added.

I searched around and found that there was a new version (1.5.6) published, so I decided to bite the bullet and install that version.

The install seemed to go smoothly but I am still getting the same phenomenon.

I searched the forum and although there are several references to being unable to create a new user, none of them appeared to address my particular problem.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

John.

Hi John,

Please post the link to your Coppermine gallery as per board rules.

Johnfromhere

Apologies - I was thinking that as it was an admin type problem and most of the gallery is private anyway, a link would not be much help.

The gallery is at :- http://www.metzbigband.co.uk/gallery

Cheers.

John.

Yet, Google's cache of displayimage.php produces a page that documents your running version 1.4.10 as recently as April 18, 2010. Which is of great concern to me, as running so many versions behind (for such an extended time) might have subjected your site to possible harm.

However it's extremely difficult for me to try and identify if this is the case (or any other case) because your gallery requires registration and login privileges. It's akin to taking your car to the mechanic and keeping the doors and hood locked.

Therefore, I shall defer to another supporter with more knowledge than I. Before I do, it might be helpful to enable debug mode for all (but don't post the output unless requested).

Johnfromhere

I got the version number from the Cpanel that my host provides as that was how I originally installed it.

Thanks for the tip on 'debug'.

Cheers.

John.

Johnfromhere

Please ignore my previous posting about the version number!  That was a test version that I had installed and then not bothered with!

Apologies - you'll get old one day  :)

Cheers

Make sure to tell the hackers who compromise your webspace that you just had that version installed for testing purposes ::). Cpanel installs go unsupported, and laziness/reluctance to keep your web apps up-to-date is something that we're not very fond of neither.

Johnfromhere

Yep.  Sorry, I should have known better :-[.

App removed!

Cheers.

I just noticed that this topic has been marked 'solved'.

When I said the 'App had been removed', I meant a second version which I had taken the version number from.
My original query still stands.

That must have been you who tagged it as solved by clicking on the corresponding button in the initial posting. Nobody else can do that for you.

So you still get a blank page when creating a new user account, even though you have upgraded? That sounds very strange indeed. Please run versioncheck to see if you actually have replaced all files - refer to http://documentation.coppermine-gallery.net/en/upgrading.htm#versioncheck for details.

Johnfromhere

I have no recollection of marking it 'solved'!  Is there any way that I can delete that marking please?

I ran the versioncheck and numerous files are marked
QuoteFile may be corrupt (or you have deliberately edited it).
.
Complete directories (eg css/ and docs/de/) are allegedly corrupt or have been edited).
Most confusing!

I have a complete backup of my original (1.4.10) - would it be best to restore that and start over again?

Cheers.

No.

Try to perform an update as suggested in the docs using this package

Johnfromhere

Thanks, Joachim.

I did the update as you suggested and with the version you suggested.

On doing a versioncheck, most of the files are marked
Quote1.5.7 (newer than 1.5.6)         n/a    Your file is newer than anticipated.
which I assume is OK but the ones in the attachment are either mandatory files that are missing or it says poss corrupted/edited.

I have not attempted to perform any admin functions on the gallery as yet.  I thought I would wait for you advice before doing so.

Cheers.

John.

That's OK, the files that versioncheck complains about are not mission-critical.

Johnfromhere

Thanks Joachim

I just tried to create a new user and still got a blank page and no new user created.

The command it used was
Quote....../usermgr.php?op=update&user_id=new_user

I refreshed the browser but - still a blank page and no new user created.

Any ideas please?

Cheers.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Johnfromhere

I enabled debug mode, however, as I get a blank page after attempting to create a new user and as the only way I can get back is to hit the 'previous page' button in my browser (Firefox 3.6.4), which of course gives me the page as it was before I tried to create a new user, I assume that the debug details also relate to the action before my attempt.

By 'server error logs' do you mean the 'error_log' in the main coppermine directory?  If so, I can't see anything in there that might help.
If not, I have had a look around on the server at my hosting company and cannot find any error logs.

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers.

John.

To help yourself to get help
    • enable debug and leave it on - (Do Not Post Debug output here)
    • Turn on notices in debug
    • Enable logging
    • Provide a test account.....or if you cannot
    • Remove the access restrictions on your gallery....because

Supporters can not "see" anything beyond your login page, making it difficult to diagnose your problem.

Hi Joe

Many thanks for your advice:-

I am not at liberty to remove the access restrictions on the gallery – the users have requested that it is run as currently set up.
Should anyone in authority ask for a test account, I would gladly set one up – if I could! The whole problem is that I cannot 'Create new user'.  Also, as the command I am having problems with is an admin only command, I would obviously be very careful about whom I gave admin access to – even if I could.

Regards

John.
