Internal Server Error when uploading

When trying to upload images i get a 500 Internal Server Error

This i what the Apache error log says:
"malformed header from script" indicates that the script has sendt an invalid header to the browser."

I get the error when trying to upload a *.jpg-picture (2048x1536, 688kb). After resizing the image to 512x384 (196 kb) uploading works fine!
Max upload size in Coppermine is set to 3024 kb.

What can be the cause for this and is there are way to fix it?
