can't delete picture

When I try to delete a picture I get an error saying:
'directory is not writable, file can't be deleted'

How can I delete a picture?

You have to set the permissions of that directory on file system level correctly. Usually you can do this with your FTP client application or via SSH.

Should be correct. Please post a link to your gallery, enable debug mode for all and also post a test user account which can upload pictures, so we can perform some tests.
