Do you have to use the same database that your forum is using or can it be different ?

You can use the same or a different database. Most bridging issues you will see are more domain based. You can read all that is required here - http://documentation.coppermine-gallery.net/en/bridging.htm#integrating_prerequisites_start
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.
