If upgrading as mentioned above with my custom theme, do I have to take the same steps as described in the theme-upgrade guide of the Online Manual under item # 3.4?

Your upgraded theme files should work with 1.3.1, so no more work required.
It has been a long time now since I did my little bit here, and have done no coding or any other such stuff since. I'm back to being a noob here
