login as admin
goto gallery
select album properties
Change Permissions for the album to a group

Also when I logout as admin I get this error

Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.

Would this be anything to do with it ?

No.

Did you make sure to go to coppermine's group manager after editing your groups in SMF? You have to, to trigger a resync of coppermine with SMF.

Please post a link and a test user account.

well, if the issue has been solved there's no need for me to visit your page, right?
Tagging this thread as "Solved" then.

Sorry Gau Gau thought you were going to check the error message I'm getting

'Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.'

I'm not sure, this is an SMF error. What version of SMF are you running? I recommend upgrading to SMF1.0 RC1 - fixed session issues on this board as well (urm, nearly at least ;)). I guess this is related to the security measures in SMF to avoid hacking.
