extending coppermine's user profile

I'm using coppermine's userdbase for the rest of my site. I'd like to extend the users profile with some new things that are relevant for the rest of my website.

Now before i accidentally screw up my install:

Can i simply add another collum in de userdbase so i can add something to the user profile? e.g. add a option for receiving mail on certain other events on my site?

or will this screw up my install?
