I have been seeing quite a few complaints about this lately. New members are unable to find the location of the page navigation when in thumbnail view.
The page numbers that we know how to find (at the lower right hand corner) are almost invisible to the eye of the new user.

So, my suggestion is to create two kinds of extra navigational buttons at the top as well.
1) The page numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, etc)
2) Next page and Previous page

The page numbers on top do seem to be necessary. I'm sure that other people have heard complaints about the difficulty with which people navigate through their pages. Just adding this would solve about half of those complaints.
The next and previous page are just for the ease of use. They're not the most essential improvements, but they would make it easier to navigate.

There's a mod that will add previous/next buttons to pagination - it's being considered to add this to the standard distribution (as an admin-settable option).

If it were up to me, that would definitely be added.
However, that is not the full extent of this request. I am suggesting that you add the same table row that is currently at the bottom of the page just below the title and sorting options, just like the page navigation is both at the top and the bottom on this forum.

Doing this has several advantages over just the single navigation at the bottom. Not only does it make the navigation more user-friendly, it also means you don't have to scroll all the way down every single time you look at a page.

As for downsides? I can't reallly think of any...

I suggest to continue here http://forum.coppermine-gallery.net/index.php?topic=8166.0

basicly it's enhancing one hack into something a bit more user friendly ;)
Just can't find the correct spot yet in the code to add the prev and next button above the thumbails as well as below them.
